It’s a new year, so why not make 2017 the year you finally become a master of home organization with Homz. We found five resolutions to make this your tidiest year!

Resolution #1: Lose (closet) weight.
Everyone wants to lose a few pounds come January 1. But why not resolve to lose a different type of weight by decluttering your home. Go through your home and commit to filling a trash bag for each closet, garage, attic, or any other storage space you may have. Soon the clutter pounds will start melting away like magic. Unsure of where to begin? See resolution number two…

Resolution #2: Out with the old.
A new year is a fresh start – and the perfect chance to reexamine everything in your home to determine what should stay and what should go. Do you have decorations you didn’t use for the holidays? Did you get gifts that could replace things you already own (shoes, kitchen gadgets, or clothing)? What about clothes you didn’t wear for all of 2016? Take inventory of everything you did not use in 2016, then figure out if it is to be donated or trashed.

Resolution #3: Divide, label, and conquer.
Now that you’re downsizing, this is the perfect time to reorganize and label everything. This will help you determine what will get donated and what’s staying. You can even go deeper by going through the entire house, starting with labeling drawers and closets and ending with neatly labeled storage boxes and bins in the garage and attic.

Resolution #4: Work out a weekly system for keeping organized.
Most resolutions are broken after just two weeks of effort. But if you create weekly tasks, you will ensure your home will stay organized and tidy all the way to 2018. First make a schedule of when you’ll do what: Sunday is the garage, Monday is the living room, Tuesday is the bedrooms, etc. This spreads the work out into easy, manageable portions throughout the week and lets you focus on specific parts of the house rather than darting all over. Then take the time on each designated day to not only clean the room, but also reevaluate everything in the room and if it belongs somewhere else or if it should be disposed of.
